Intro to Healthcare is a college-level course at FDSH that allows students to take a more in depth look at careers in healthcare to identify a path they are interested in. As part of this course, students participate in panel-style interviews to gain real life experience. Students choose a career and create a resume and cover letter.
Ms. O'Leary invited various community members and healthcare professionals to interview students and give feedback, helping them improve their skills before entering the workforce.
A big thank you to the individuals who gave their time to interview the students. There was representation from the following:
Marian Home
UnityPoint Fort Dodge
Iowa Central Community College
Fort Dodge Fire Rescue
FDCSD Staff and Administration
FDCSD School Board Members

A few weeks ago, Ms. Adams at FDSH invited two well-known Iowa sports officials, Joe Havenhill and Mark Amadeo to speak to the Student-Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC) about the importance of officiating and building strong relationships with officials during games. Without hesitation, both Joe and Mark enthusiastically agreed and made the drive from the Des Moines area to join the group during their 30-minute WINN session.
The students learned valuable lessons about treating officials with kindness and respect as a sign of good sportsmanship. They also gained insight into the shortage of officials across all levels and perspectives that come with understanding officiating, an essential yet often overlooked aspect of competition.
After the session, Brandt Lawler stayed behind to discuss his recent experience officiating at the middle school level with Joe and Mark. It highlighted the potential for more young men and women to get involved in officiating and make a positive impact on sports.

Every other Tuesday during WINN, students in Profe Hinders’ class host Café, Chocolate Caliente y Conversación. This activity pairs English Learners with students from Profe’s Spanish class and the Mejor Juntos (Better Together) group. Together, they practice English and Spanish while enjoying coffee, hot cocoa, and great conversation. The experience has been fun and inspirational, with students engaging, connecting, and enjoying the opportunity to learn from one another!

Before Thanksgiving break, Ag in the Classroom visited Feelhaver Elementary. 5th grade students learned about ethanol production. They viewed a virtual tour of an ethanol plant and saw the entire process, from the farmer delivering corn, to loading up the by-product to take back and feed to his livestock. Students performed a scientific experiment and made their own ethanol in a Ziplock bag.

This contribution will help fund the creation of a Health Occupations Lab at Fort Dodge Middle School, supporting the district’s Health Occupations Class and its mission to introduce students to careers in the healthcare field.
